What Can Invisalign Treat?

Often, our patients wonder what Invisalign treats. As Rosenberg orthodontists, we this orthodontic treatment as a tool for an array of dental issues. Invisalign is a safe, effective method to straighten teeth without the impact of metal brackets and wires from traditional braces

The two treatments function quite similarly, slowly shifting the position of your teeth. However, instead of wires and brackets adhered to the teeth, Invisalign utilizes removable aligners. In many cases, we see the same results with these two different methods.

When it comes to orthodontic treatments in Rosenberg, Invisalign is a powerful tool that patients love. Still, whichever treatment you use, the most important aspect is to have a skilled professional design your treatment.

Treatable Cases for Invisalign

When you want to straighten your teeth without the pain of metal wires, trust in Invisalign. Treat a broad range of dental issues with these clear aligner trays. From mild cases of gapped teeth to more serious concerns, this treatment has broad applications.

While Invisalign can’t treat every case, it’s a great option for many patients!

Gapped Teeth

Can Invisalign treat gapped teeth? Absolutely!

Gaps between the teeth often appear in different areas of the mouth or throughout a patient’s bite. One cause is abnormal growth of the jawbone. Another reason is tooth loss, which causes surrounding teeth to change position due to the extra space available.

Aside from a less aesthetically pleasing smile, gapped teeth often lead to gum problems. For example, periodontal pockets might form. Additionally, gaps increase the chance of developing periodontal disease.

Typically, your gums rely on your teeth for protection. As such, gaps leave them more vulnerable.

Overcrowded Teeth

Does Invisalign treat overcrowding in teeth? You know it!

When someone develops a small jawbone, it creates overcrowding in their teeth. Simply put, your teeth don’t have enough space to sit comfortably.

As Rosenberg orthodontists, we highly recommend treating overcrowded teeth. Left untreated, overcrowded teeth lead to severely crooked teeth that cause further issues with your bite. Additionally, overcrowding makes oral hygiene a challenge, allowing plaque to accumulate. When this happens, it increases the risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Overbite

In some cases, we use Invisalign to treat overbites. Overbites occur when your upper teeth bite too far over your lower teeth. Oftentimes, this is a genetic condition or the result of overdeveloped bone structure.

It’s important to correct overbites because they make it difficult to chew and often irritate the gums. Additionally, unnatural tooth placement wears down your lower teeth and causes painful joint problems in the jaw.

Underbite

An underbite refers to when the lower front teeth protrude out past your upper teeth. Typically, there is underdevelopment in your upper jaw. Alternatively, there’s overdevelopment in your lower jaw. At times, it’s a combination of the two. Another cause is missing upper teeth that cause other teeth to shift position.

Often, underbites make it difficult to chew. This is because it prevents the front teeth and molars from functioning properly. Moreover, this leads to worn teeth and causes painful joint issues.

Open Bite

Can Invisalign treat open bites? Yes, it can!

Open bites are when your teeth don’t make physical contact when you close your jaw. Oftentimes, the front teeth don’t touch. Typically, this is a genetic issue that forms an abnormal jaw structure. In some cases, excessive thumb-sucking is a cause.

It’s important to treat open bites because they make chewing difficult or even painful. Additionally, it causes speech impairment in some cases or increases the risk of TMJ.

Crossbite

When a crooked jaw causes teeth to align in a strange way, such as one or more upper teeth touching the inside of the lower teeth, you have a crossbite. Oftentimes, this issue leads to worn teeth, bone loss, and gum disease.

At our Rosenberg dental clinic, we use Invisalign to treat crossbites and help patients attain a straighter smile.

What Can’t Invisalign Treat?

Unfortunately, there are a few dental issues Invisalign can’t treat. Luckily, our full-service dental and orthodontic group has solutions for everyone!

Shape and Size of Teeth

The shape and size of your teeth are something no orthodontic treatment can fix. Generally, this requires cosmetic dentistry techniques. At our full-service dental group, we offer veneers and dental implants to help you craft a beautiful, healthy smile.

Intrusions and Extrusions

With the design of Invisalign, treatment for intrusions and extrusions are not as effective.

  • Intrusions require lower teeth.
  • Extrusions require drawing out impacted teeth.

At times, our orthodontists first use traditional braces to achieve this result. Next, we switch to Invisalign.

Extreme Rotation

Crowded growth during development at times leads to extreme tooth rotation. When the rotation is too great, Invisalign is not the best treatment to shift it into place.
